Allergic Reaction or Rash?

Our little guy has developed a pretty rough looking rash or allergic reaction. We have seen two doctors. The first one (Friday) said that it was an allergic reaction to the amoxicillin that he was put on Wednesday for an ear infection. We started him on Benadryl to help control the reaction. Well ... it got worse by today and now there isn't a spot on Luke that isn't covered. We took him into urgent care today and the doc there said that it was something viral and that he expects it to start fading. Luke's eyes are also gummy and have mucous draining. Lukey boy is just about as laid back as can be though. He isn't his usual smiley self but he is one tough little guy. It doesn't appear to be dangerous though we are keeping a watchful eye on him. His cheeks are just two big rashes. Pray for lukey boy.

There are a number of food allergies and sensitivities that can cause rashes. I took my family out for my daughters birthday. She wanted sushi. We went to a place where I know the food is very fresh.

I ordered my 15 month old plain rice which he ate and he had a small bite of rice from my california roll.

He broke out in a rash within an hour and I was not feeling too great myself. On a hunch, I called the place and asked if there was any MSG in the food itself or the sauce.

None in the food, but there was in one of the bottled sauces after they checked thoroughly. I am pretty sensitive to it (i have trouble breathing after eating any). My son is too I guess. MSG is not even a food, it is a flavor enhancer...and why are those needed? It's not rocket science. That place is OFF our list of safe places to eat.

Through trial and error, we also noticed he is sensitive to dairy and eggs. We did the primary allergy skin test and he also tested positive for nuts.

Patterns will tell you if a food is problematic. Writing things down is helpful.

The most common food sensitivities and allergies are to:
Cows Milk
Tree Nuts
Eggs
Citrus
Shellfish
Soy
Wheat/Gleuten

Here are a couple of decent sitesto help you learn:

Hi I'm just a random dad researching my son's current rash.

It looks EXACTLY like your son's. My son is on the 8th day of amoxicillin for an ear infection. His Ped is clueless and useless and we couldn't tell what he did or didn't think.

At any rate, we (and one of his nurses (tgfn)) think its a reaction to the amoxicillin, but not an allergic reaction. Check out this article...

Good luck!
